Baumgartner named as new Austria Vienna coach

Gerald Baumgartner has been named as the new coach of Austria Vienna football coach, the club announced on Tuesday night.

The 49-year-old coach comes from heading up St. Pölten and now shoulders responsibility for bringing the struggling Vienna club back to life and a disappointing season.

A former striker for Austria Vienna and Austrian Salzburg, Baumgartner began his coaching career in 2005 when he became assistant coach of the Salzburg junior team.

He coached second division St. Pölten all the way to this year`s Austrian Cup final, following on from equal success last year when he won the trophy with third division team Pasching.

Now he has to turn around Austria Vienna who finished fourth in the recent season, despite being the champions in 2013. They also failed to qualify for the Europa League and finished last in their Champions League group behind Atletico Madrid, Zenit St-Petersburg and Porto.
