Elephant to leave Schönbrunn Zoo over baby brother

A five-year-old elephant has to leave Vienna’s Schönbrunn Zoo after his mum gave birth to a baby last week.

Harald Schwammer, deputy director of the oldest zoo in the world, explained today (Mon): "Kibo will be transferred to another zoo soon since elephants only accept one young tusker. We must avoid causing conflict in the colony. There would be challenges for the leadership and aggression - we can't allow that."

Kibo’s mother Numbi, 17, gave birth to a yet unnamed elephant bull on Friday.

Schwammer said there has been no decision regarding five-year-old Kibo’s new home made yet.

He added that the new-born will be presented to public during the next few days after having spent the first days of his life in an inside enclosure to avoid any possible stress.

The baby tusker weighs 112 kilos and is 93 centimetres tall.

Schönbrunn Zoo bosses hope the birth means more visitors after suffering a stark slump in visitor figures last year.

Vienna tourism officials announced last week that – with 2.183 million – the zoo saw almost 400,000 fewer visitors in 2009 than it had in the previous year.

It however managed to retain its position as the city’s second most popular sight behind Schönbrunn Palace which saw 2.467 million visitors last year.
