A website focusing on news for gays and lesbians has recommended Vienna as a holiday destination.
Gayapolis (www.gayapolis.com) points out today (Mon) that homosexuals "have played a prominent role in Viennese public life" and it suggests visits to the Museum of Art (Kunsthistorisches Museum, KHM) and the Museumsquartier (MQ). The State Opera and the Burgtheater are praised as "major cultural institutions" in the Austrian capital.
The internet platform – which stresses that Vienna "offers an immense range of cultural, culinary and shopping experiences" – describes the city as the "undisputed capital of gay and lesbian life in Austria."
Belvedere Palace is mentioned for its permanent art exhibition featuring works by Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt and Oskar Kokoschka.
Gayapolis reports that gays enjoy cocktails at the Mango Bar, adding that the Felixx Bar and the Eagle Bar are other locations in Mariahilf district popular with Vienna’s homosexual community. The Motto in the city centre is listed for being voted Vienna’s top eatery for gays in the Name-It magazine.
An estimated 170,000 gays and lesbians live in the city, according to Gayapolis. The capital’s overall population ranges around 1.7 million.
The website’s Vienna tips come weeks after Daily Mail reporter Emily Payne described how a late Saturday morning at its Naschmarkt "is more Manhattan than old-school Europe."
The journalist also wrote: "Timeless elegance with a touch of eternal empress – the whole city feels like this to me."
