A spat between neighbours in China threatened to turn deadly when a man hurled the one-year-old baby of the man he was rowing with into the air. Meng Tuan, 30, watched in horror as the child crashed to the ground suffering serious injuries. The row which escalated so badly happened in Xinji township in central China after his neighbour's young son, a boy called Lei, aged 9, threw stones at the solar water heater of Cheng Wang, 38. According to police, Cheng Wang went to remonstrate with his neighbour - to find a large extended family celebration going on. Drink had been taken, according to sources, and the mood of the party-goers was ugly after being disturbed. First they laughed at Cheng - then they threatened him and he was pushed, shoved and finally slapped. Feeling cornered, Cheng ran and, in a bid to divert attention from himself, grabbed the child and threw him into the air. "We do not consider it an act of pre-meditated violence, but it was an assault," said a police spokesman. "This man was feeling threatened and looking for a way out. Unfortunately, the innocent baby was seriously injured as a result." The baby suffered multiple fractures and was taken to hospital. At first doctors feared for his life but later he was declared out of danger. The police spokesman added that not just Cheng was under arrest but also the family of the baby were facing a probe for the assault and criminal damage.
