Police in Russia have hailed the courage of a woman used as a sex slave who managed to not only escape from her captor, but also saved other women held by him.
The woman Eleanor Glebova, 29, escaped from her prison in Irkutsk, a city in the far east of Russia, after getting drunk to pluck up the courage for her break-out bid.
She was being held there by suspected drug Emmanuel Maslow, 34, along with three other women. Police suspect Maslow who has previous convictions for forcing women into prostitution and drug dealing, wanted to create a "harem" of women. He had managed to trap her and the other women by meeting them in the city and enticing them back to his flat.
Like the loner Ariel Castro in America - the pervert who picked up and chained three women in his Cleveland home for over a decade - Maslow kept the women he tricked into coming home with him in shackles.
He perpetually threatened to kill them if they made a noise or tried to appeal for help from clients that came to his home to buy drugs.
He had rigged up his house with a security door so they could not escape and made sure they were drunk when he freed them for sex sessions. But brave Eleanor also used the drink to give her the courage to try to climb to safety.
Eleanor Glebova, who was a local woman, was held in an apartment on the second floor of his building, and finally got the chance to get away by knotting sheets and clambering to safety when he was in the kitchen.
"We returned to the apartment with her and freed the other terrified women," said a police spokesman. "All are getting medical treatment and the man is in custody."
He did not say how long the women had been held but confirmed that the man seemed to have planned for them to be there for a long time.
He said that large quantities of drugs had also been discovered at the flat and that the man faced charges of drug dealing and sex trafficking.
Police suspect that other people knew that the four women were there and that there were indications he had offered them to clients of his drugs business for sex.
But they added that it very much depended on the statements from the women after they were questioned.
