A duck got revenge on a hunter who shot it after the man drowned while trying to fish the dead bird's body out of a lake.
The 34-year-old hunter Tobiasz Kaczmarek from the city Olsztyn, in north-eastern Poland, had been drunk and had apparently waded out too deep before losing his footing and drowning.
He had earlier been drinking heavily while celebrating a birthday party and had wandered off from the other party-goers at around 3am, saying he was going on a duck hunt.
Pals thought he was joking, but after he failed to return a few hours later, friends set out to look for him.
Pawel Wysocki, 37, said: "We couldn't find him, but we found his shotgun and clothes lying by the side of the lake.
"We knew he was a bad swimmer, especially having drunk as much as he had, he would have had no chance. It seems he shot the duck, and then got undressed and waded in to retrieve it. He must have lost his footing."
They called the emergency services, who found the man’s body floating near the dead duck and recovered both.
A fire brigade spokesman added: "Hunting and drinking do not go together anyway. All sorts of things could have gone wrong. The duck would not have been flying at night, so he probably shot it on the water. The bullets could have ended up hitting anyone."
