Moose Runs Off After Crash That Killed Driver And Destroyed Car

A Russian motorist was killed after he struck a moose weighing 500lbs on the outskirts of a remote village.

Kiril Damokousin, 42, hit the wandering moose at 4am near the village of Volga in the Nekouzsky District. His car burst into flames after the impact and rolled into a ditch, but the moose scampered off seemingly unharmed.

Oleg Slokashov, 23, who was driving in the opposite direction and saw the impact and explosion, said: "The car went up like a fireball. The crash with the moose must have severed the petrol feed pipe and sprayed fuel all over the hot engine block.

"I ran to the edge of the ditch but there was nothing I could do. The heat was so intense and the man was trapped in his seat. He never stood a chance.

"As I pulled back from the edge of the ditch I saw the moose walking away. It was limping a little but otherwise appeared to be unhurt. They are massive creatures and in this case was more than a match for the car."

Before the car went into the ditch it side-swiped an electricity pylon, causing the driver's door to cave in meaning he had no chance of escaping. When medics and firemen arrived at the scene his body was totally carbonised.

"He was burned to a crisp," said a fire brigade spokesman. "There was nothing identifiable in the wreckage as a human being."

Animal welfare officials have started a search of nearby woodland to try to find the moose which, despite its sprightly exit from the scene, might be in pain. "We want to try to treat it if possible," said Alexei Kopicek, a local vet. "He could be in a lot of pain from internal injuries."

The greatest number of accidents with wild animals occurs in the region in May and June because animals are on the move to look for new habitats and food sources.
