A taxi driver who almost killed a 15-year-old schoolgirl in an accident in Russia has turned himself into police saying he had been trying to impress the teen and her girl pal when he crashed.
But as he topped over 110 mph, Michail Pyatkin, 29, crashed and instead of helping, fled the scene leaving passenger Elena Lakouva bleeding in the wreck on the outskirts of the capital Moscow. Her life hung in the balance for two days but she eventually pulled through after intensive emergency surgery.
Pyartkin, from the town of Volodarsk near Moscow, told police when he gave himself up: "The image of her lying in the road made me feel really bad. I just panicked after the accident but I later came to my senses. I am so sorry for what I have done."
According to Elena, she was with a friend of hers called Katya in the backseat of the taxi when the accident occurred. She says they repeatedly asked the driver to slow down, but he did not.
"We were asking him how fast was he going and he said 120km/h (74mph), but when I looked myself the speedometer showed 180-190km/h (110-120 mph) and then we crashed," revealed Elena.
"There was this blinding flash, a huge roar of twisting metal and the pain that coursed through my legs. I passed out and woke up in hospital two days later."
She had to be cut out of the wreckage which Pyatkin managed to flee from. He stayed on the run for three days before walking into a police station and giving himself up.
Police said he was working for the taxi company "Lastochka" at the time of the crash.
According to the director of the company, Ilya Alekseyev, the driver joined the
company in April and was supposed to pass a technical inspection and medical examination on the morning of the day of the accident.
When he did not arrive his documents were automatically invalidated. "He should not have picked these girls up, he was not driving legally," said Alekseyev.
