Polluted Land Gets A Tent To Cover Bad Smells

Polluted Land Gets A Tent To Cover Bad Smells

A pesticide factory launched a cover up to disguise polluted land left behind in its wake, by putting up a huge tent.

The pesticide factory shut down a decade ago but its legacy remains. Two years ago, when diggers moved in to start a new building project, vile smelling earth was uncovered. It was so bad that many workers vomited on the spot, and the project was shelved.

Now it turns out that bosses at the factory ordered a cover up of some 50,000 square metres of land with fresh earth to hide the poison they poured into the ground. And the bad smell hasn't gone away since, convincing locals in the city Hangzhou in east China’s Zhejiang province that they are living with a health time bomb.

"I’m quite worried that the smell will influence my child’s health, so I seldom open the window for air ventilation," said Fu Yang, a nearby resident.

Faced with people’s complaints, an environment protection company has helped build a gigantic tent to cover the land paid for by the former land occupier. The 36-meter high tent covers an area of 20,000 sqm, but residents say it is no real solution.

"We can still frequently smell the bad smells, especially at dusk, so the tent is not much use," said a local.

Expert said there is likely yellow phosphorus in the earth and now they are thinking about how to deal with the polluted land.
