Angry Bird Gets A Police Mugshot

Angry Bird Gets A Police Mugshot

A bird-brained chick which fell out of the nest was about to become a cat's breakfast when schoolchildren rescued it.

The blue-tit toddler was seconds away from death when Andreas Probst, 10, and his pals walked by.

"We're told by our parents not to disturb wild animals but we could see this cat creeping up about to pounce and we knew the little thing wouldn't have stood a chance," he said.

"The chick was soaking wet. Had its feathers been dry it might have been able to fly back up into the tree to rejoin mum and dad. As it was it was going nowhere.

"I scooped it up into my schoolbag. It was making quite a racket and didn't understand that we were doing it the turn of its young life. We didn't walk off with it but called police on our mobile who came and took charge of it."

The bird, said a local expert, had probably been playing too raucously in the nest with siblings when it fell out of the tree in the city of Essen, in western Germany, 20 feet to the ground below.

A police spokesman Peter Fruehauf said: "Rescuing newly born chicks is not necessarily one of the main jobs of the police but in this case we were happy to help the three schoolboys rescue the foundling."

He said the bird was taken to an animal rescue centre nearby, after it had been snapped in the police station looking particularly unhappy about the situation it found itself in.

He said that the animal shelter they had managed to place the chick with a new family and it was doing well and would soon be old enough to fly off on its own.
