A Muslim family in Germany is having to deal with a double tragedy after Turkish brothers Ismail and Fatih Altun crashed into each other, leaving both of them hospitalised and with one of them on life support in intensive care.
According to German police the older of the two Ismail, 25, was returning home from a visit to the local mosque and was driving along the Landstrasse road on the outskirts of the western city of Cologne. His brother Fatih, 24, was heading in the opposite direction.
A police spokesman said that the younger driver had apparently been travelling fast in his Volkswagen Passat and had just overtaken three cars when he suddenly ended up travelling head-on towards the Fiat driven by his brother and heading in the opposite direction.
According to a police spokesman: "Both of the drivers pulled the steering wheel in the same direction and both collided head-on with the same tree at the side of the road."
Fireman said that the younger man managed to free himself from the wreckage but that the elder brother who was critically injured had to be cut free from the Fiat Seicento before being taken to the hospital and put in an artificial coma. Doctors described his condition as critical.
The boy's father Ibrahim however rejected the police claim and said that the pair had been travelling together when one of the cars developed a fault that forced it to leave the road, although that failed to explain how it was that both cars had crashed head-on or the fact that other motorists said the Passat had just overtaken three cars when the crash happened.
