Dozens of people sat around watching as a young girl was beaten to the floor in a savage attack by five other young women in a restaurant in China, yet when a man waded in and tried to fight the women off the outraged onlookers attacked him - and dragged him away for a beating because he was attacking women.
The bizarre double standards where it is apparently okay for a gang of women to beat up another woman, but not for a man to attack women in defence of the helpless victim was captured on video posted online that has caused heated debate on Chinese social media networks.
The incident happened in the city of Dongguan in south-eastern China’s Guangdong province. Footage taken by an onlooker shows that although there are dozens of people standing outside the restaurant looking through the window, and others including waiting staff standing around inside, none of them got involved to help the young woman lying on the ground. In fact, people are seen walking past as if nothing is happening.
But when it got too much for a passer-by who jumped in to try and fight the women off, he became the victim himself of the crowd and is grabbed by several other men who did not do anything against the female attackers. At the end of the video he is seen being dragged outside of the restaurant where according to witnesses he was given a beating before running off.
Local police said that they had not had a complaint either from the woman on the ground or from the man or any of the five women involved in the incident, and were therefore powerless to act. They said that the restaurant, which had clearly been smashed up as the sound of crockery being thrown is heard repeatedly, had also not made a complaint.
Police spokesman Gang Sun said: "We have not had any complaints and so we can assume that any injuries that resulted from this were only minor, and therefore we are not taking any action. If one of those involved makes a complaint we will investigate but until then our hands are tied."
