Austria’s coldest temperatures this winter were recorded last night. Temperatures fell as low as minus 31.5C degrees last at the weather station in the Ötztaler Alps.
The warmest temperature recorded last night in Austria was minus 9.1C degrees in Carinthia. Austria’s highest weather station, which sits at a height of 3,440 metres on the Brunnenkogel mountain, recorded however the freezing temperature of minus 31.5C.
Temperatures in the early hours of Friday morning dropped below minus 10C degrees in 257 places in Austria. Inhabited regions at 1,577 metres, around the area of Galtür, felt temperatures of minus 23.3C degrees. Even lowland areas in Lower Austria saw the mercury drop to minus 17.7C degrees.
Austria’s deep freeze was worst felt in Tannheim in Tyrol on 6 February where inhabited regions suffered with temperatures of minus 28.9C degrees. This winter’s record was broken last night however with the temperature of minus 31.5C degrees below freezing.
The coldest temperature on record for Austria was recorded in January 1905 when a frosty minus 37.5C degrees was recorded in the Alps.
