Fire brigade officials were left to clear up a bloody mess after a tanker taking blood from an abattoir in Austria to a recycling centre in Slovenia sprung a leak.
The driver had forgotten to open up a ventilator allowing gas from the blood to escape causing the lorry to spring a leak – pouring a large quantity of the 24,000 litres it was carrying of bloody liquid onto the road before police managed to stop the vehicle.
Locals said that the stench was so bad that many people were instantly sick.
Several cars that drove over the liquid were left smelling so that they were no longer usable and the owners are now demanding compensation from the Slovenian company that owns the vehicle.
Police said that even one officer arrived at the scene had also been taken ill from the stench and that the blood had come from the animals that had been slaughtered at an abattoir in Graz.
The blood was due to be processed at a biogas factory across the border in Slovenia.
The driver who forgot to open the event said he had not noticed anything, even though the smell was complained about by people living up to 2 km away from where the accident happened.
Fireman who were forced to clean up the mess had to wear special breathing apparatus and chemical protection suits.
