Councillor gunned down before grenade explosion

Autopsy reveals Vienna victim gunned down before grenade explosion

An autopsy of the two men believed to have been killed in a car explosion in Vienna last weekend has revealed that one of the men, an Austrian town councillor, had been shot down before the blast.

The vehicle exploded at 3am on Saturday in the Ottakring district after a hand grenade went off inside the car. Police had initially thought the explosion was an accident but the new evidence now suggests that the two men are victims of a crime.

Police have identified the driver who died after receiving multiple gunshot wounds as 45-year-old Zlatko Novakovic, an Austrian national of Bosnian origin. Novakovic was an SPO town councillor in Mondsee and owner of a transport business in Salzburg. The second man was German national Waldemar W., 57, who had no gunshot wounds but who died on the way to the hospital as a result of injuries from the blast. No weapons have been found at the scene and the men have no prior convictions.

"We’re all stunned," Novaovic’s colleague Deputy Mayor Franz Vockner said.

Novakovic borrowed the BMW vehicle from his employee Bulgarian national Georgi Stankov so he and Waldemar could drive to Vienna. Stankov reportedly spoke to the Austrian driver, who gave the impression nothing was wrong, just hours before the car exploded.
