Manfred Juraczka is one of critics against the salary of student publishing house director

Greens stay silent on high salary at student publishing house

Austria's Green party have come under fire for their silence on the high salary of Director of Facultas student union publishing house.

Thomas Stauffer's salary went up to 458,000 Euros in 2011-2012, double what he was getting paid in the previous year. Meanwhile, in the same period, Stauffer had cut the business of the publishing house by more than half to 508,000 Euros.

Leaders of conservative and right wing parties have voiced their outrage at the high salary, with leader of the OEVP Manfred Juraczka commenting: "One has to wonder whether the student union should not focus on student politics, instead of throwing money for social policy out of the window."

The Greens have held back on commenting about the affair, despite many in Vienna voicing anger at the high salary. Furthermore, former spokesperson of the Greens & Alternative students (GRAS) Doris Gusenbauer once sat on the Supervisory Board of Facultas.

Chairman of the student union WU Chiara Werner Tutschku has criticised this Supervisory Board, saying: "I think the amount of Stauffer's salary is not reasonable, especially considering the economic development of the company."

Stauffer has not commented on criticisms of his salary, which is higher than that of the chancellor and many business leaders, as he is on a family skiing holiday.
