Leaking tanker causes Milky Way

A busy motorway was closed down for over an hour after 6,000 litres of fresh milk turned all three lanes into a Milky Way when a milk tanker was involved in a mass pileup.

The accident happened on the busy A2 Südautobahn near the city of Graz when the five lorries and five cars crashed into each other during heavy fog.

Four people were injured in the accident which also left the road completely covered in milk when the milk transporter got caught up in a crash with a lorry, and then was hit from the rear by another lorry. The collision ripped a hole in the tank that left the entire contents blocking the road and a tailback of several kilometres before it could finally be cleared.

One of those injured had to be cut free from the wreckage according to firemen who said that the clean-up process was delayed by the fact that the controversial 'Rettunsgasse' regulation had not worked at all.

Under the law introduced a year ago, when a crash happens drivers are now bizarrely expected to pull over onto the hard shoulder and also to use the fast lane and centre lane, leaving the slow lane free for emergency services. But most of those using Austrian motorways including the foreign drivers seem to be unaware of the rule, meaning that many people still remain in the slow lane leaving all four lanes blocked.

Fire service spokesman Dieter Pilat said that the controversial scheme had proven a disaster in this case as the slow lane had been quickly blocked by drivers who either didn't know or ignored the rule.
