Swedish woman fighting for life after being run over by snowmobile

A young Swedish waitress is fighting for her life after being run over by a 6.5 tonne snowmobile after deciding to ski down a closed off piste while it was being prepared at the Saalbach-Hinterglemm resort in Salzburg.

Austrian rescue workers said they got the call from the snowmobile driver to say that he had run over the skier whilst carrying out work to prepare the piste after the lifts had closed.

But the blonde 20-year-old Viktoria Gedda had remained behind on one of the mountain huts and decided to head back into the valley at 18:00, an hour after the lifts had closed. Although she was with friends she had decided to head off alone down the closed run – where she crashed into the back of the snowmobile which was reversing up the run and was crushed under its tracks.

Rescue workers got the panicked call from the snowmobile driver to say that he had run over a skier and an air ambulance was dispatched to fly the critically injured woman to a hospital in Salzburg. Medics said that the tracks had left injuries over the young woman's entire body.

Police said that the young woman had been in the region working as a waitress at an apres ski bar and that the skiing had been on one of the last days of the ski season before the runs were closed.

Hospital spokesman Gerhard Oberthaler confirmed that after an emergency operation lasting several hours her condition had been stabilised and she was now in intensive care.

The young Swedish woman's parents have in the meantime arrived in Salzburg from the Swedish city of Gothenburg and were receiving psychological counselling together with the driver of the snowmobile, and her friend who had waited for her at the bottom of the run only to be told that she had been airlifted to hospital.
