Long Night of Research in Austria

This Friday evening will see universities and institutions around Austria opening their doors, giving visitors the chance to peer over the shoulders of scientists and find out more about the research they are carrying out.

This year's 'Long Night of Research' is the sixth such event and features a talk from Director General of CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research), Rolf-Dieter Heuer in 'Aula der Wissenschaften' in Vienna.

It is the first time that all nine federal states are involved in the evening with over 1770 'stations' around the country putting on activities - all with free admission.

Other events taking place at participating venues include free admission to presentations of research projects, discoveries and technologies by scientists. An artificial heart transplant being carried out by surgeon Daniel Zimpfer will also be performed live and watched by visitors through a video transmission in AKH in Vienna.

In Graz there are 200 demonstrations taking place, including a chance to look at one of the largest collections of biological samples in Europe at the Medical University of Graz.

Elsewhere in Lower Austria and Upper Austria, there are other activities being put on, including a chance to see the largest turbine in the world at Voith Hydro in St. Pölten and a humanoid robot in Vorarlberg.

To find out what demonstrations are happening near you visit www.langenachtderforschung.at.
