Warm March continues trend of unusual weather

March was warmer than expected for Austrians, according to the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) with some areas seeing temperatures as high as 23 degrees.

According to the Institute the weather last month was much warmer and dryer than is normal for this time of year, with temperatures in Upper Austrian three degrees higher above the average.

The temperature in Weyer, in the Upper Austria's district of Steyr-Land, hit 23 degrees whilst in the state's capital Linz the temperature was around 9 degrees and not 6 as usual. This March was particularly dry with Austria seeing 75% less rain and lots of sun - the town of Braunau in the Innviertel region of Upper Austria had 220 hours of sunshine.

On average Austria saw between a 40% and 60% increase in the amount of sunshine they saw in March 2014 compared to previous years.

The Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics say that there is an ongoing trend of extreme weather conditions with the 2013/2014 winter seeing much less snow than usual and last summer hitting record high temperatures.
