MAK turns exhibit into tribute to Hans Hollein

The Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) in Vienna will be turning their planned retrospective on the late architect Hans Hollein into a posthumous tribute.

Hollein died in his hometown Vienna two weeks ago, less than a month after he celebrated his 80th birthday.

The exhibition at MAK will look at Hollein's eclectic designs, including those for furniture, tableware, photo montages, as well as his buildings.

Winner of the highest honour in architecture - the Pritzker prize - Hollein is famous for his efforts leading the 1970s post-modernist movement in architecture from Vienna.

His first widely acclaimed pieces include his design for the Retti Candleshop in 1965 as well as his photos from the 1960s of industrial and architectural objects in unusual spaces, particularly the image of a giant aircraft carrier sitting on top of rolling meadows.

Born in Vienna in 1934, he began studying architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in the city before moving to the US to study in Illinois and then at the University of California, Berkeley.

When he was awarded the Pritzker prize in 1985, the jury described him as "a master of his profession" and "an architect who is also an artist, he has the good fortune to design museums that are then eager to place within their walls works of art from his hand, whether in the form of drawings, collages, or sculpture". He has also been described by Austrian Culture Minister Josef Ostermayer as "a master architect, inspiring teacher (and) visionary."

Taking place from 25 June until 5 Oct, the exhibition 'Hollein' is being put on in collaboration with Germany's Museum Abteiberg - a museum designed by the architect - and curated by Wilfried Kuhn and Marlies Wirth.
