Firemen on hand after deer mistake

This curious deer had to be rescued after taking a walk into the fire station in the Carinthian city of Klagenfurt in southern Austria, and then panicking when she didn't realise how to get back out.

Firemen were surprised to see the four-legged visitor wandering around amongst the fire engines, but when the deer saw the men it became scared and tried to hide.

It took some time until the deer could be caught and released back into the wild.

Fire service boss Siegfried Wollte said: "We don't know how she got here into the city centre. We think she was around one - two years old. It is very rare that deer come into the city and come that close to people.

"When they do of course, it's usually the fire service that gets called to try and capture them and take them back to the wild. At least on this occasion, we didn't have far to go. We managed to grab the animal which was pretty scared and quickly return it to the wild where it ran off.

"I suspect it won't be venturing back into town again in a rush, I'm surprised it got as far as it did before anybody else noticed it and reported it."

He said that at this time of year the animals often wander far and wide looking for new territories and possibly partners and are less wary than they might be for example later in the year or at winter. He added: "The chances though of finding a mate or something to eat at a fire station are pretty remote so in this case the deer was pretty wide of the mark."
