New 140-metre long suspension bridge in Salzburg

By Lisa Chapman

A new 140-metre long suspension bridge at the mountain station of the new Stubnerkogelbahn lift is to be opened in December, it has been announced.

Lift operator Gasteiner Bergbahnen AG said today (Fri) the bridge for pedestrians near Bad Gastein in Salzburg’s Pongau region, will be opened on 8 December.

It will be the highest bridge of its kind in Europe at 2,300 metres above sea level that can also be used in the winter.

The bridge will extend from the terrace of the mountain restaurant to the other side of a small valley and be a maximum of 28 metres above ground. Visitors will be able to see the ground through grating on the bottom of the one-metre wide structure, which is supported by steel cables guaranteeing it will be able to survive winds of up to 200 kilometres an hour.

The bridge will allow visitors access to a hiking trail and make possible a round-trip walk on the Stubnerkogel’s high plateau.

People who suffer from a fear of heights will be able to cross the small valley spanned by the bridge on the ground.
