Health warnings as Austria faces heatwave

Austrians need to brace themselves for a massive heatwave, meteorologists have warned.

Experts at Vienna’s Centre for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) announced today (Thurs) that temperatures were expected to reach 35 degrees centigrade at the weekend, with similar conditions at the beginning of next week.

They said some thunderstorms were likely to occur in the Alps on Sunday.

May was dominated by unusually cold and rainy weather causing several rivers across the country to overflow, before the beginning of last month boasted with temperatures of up to 37 degree centigrade.

Dozens of roofs and cars in northern parts of the country were badly damaged when thunderstorms brought golf ball size hail. Several cellars had to be pumped out by fire-fighters, while traffic was blocked at various spots by trees felled by lightning.

Doctors have appealed to elderly and sick people to avoid midday sunshine and stay indoors most of the day, adding that young and old were well advised to drink sufficiently throughout the next days.
