After 16 years the Japanese monster roars again on the big screen in the new "Godzilla" themed movie and the alpha animal of the world delivers his best performance to date.
If from the trailers you had the impression that you will not experience the presence of the legendary monster as much as you would want to, I can put your worries aside and reassure you that you will get what you ask from that movie. "Breaking Bad" fans will also get the chance to see Bryan Cranston, who at one point is even kitted out in similar attire to that worn by his meth dealer character Walter White in the TV series.
After his success with the "Monsters" movie, Gareth Edwards returns to direct "Godzilla" and manages to sit you down and not take your eyes from the screen, even to grab that coca cola next to you. Be careful not to make a mess, while you blindly look for that drink of yours. Magnificent scenes from around the world will take you on a new journey of Godzilla, which will tear cities apart - to save the world.
As for the monster itself, you will be convinced that this creature is somewhere out there. The spectacular work that has been done for this movie created a Godzilla that is the biggest yet to be seen on the big screen. The true royalty of the monster in this film lies in every move and sound it produces. When you see and hear Godzilla roar, it is easy to observe how the monster puts all its energy into creating the sound, which runs through its whole body.
If you have watched the trailers for the movies carefully, you will have realised that Godzilla is not the only monster who will bring destruction to USA and Japan in this film, since you really can’t have Godzilla destroying only the USA when it's a Japanese monster. The presence of another monster clearly was something to be expected and will give you a chance to experience breathtaking battles between two creatures.
Max Borenstein (Screenplay) and David Callaham (Story) do a good job basing the film on the Toho story of "Godzilla", and their efforts to explain everything can almost make an imaginary tale feel real.
In some ways they succeed and in others they fail. Nevertheless, let’s be honest, we all know that Godzilla is something like Santa Claus: we may want to believe in him but unfortunately he's just more of a legendary figure than a historical one. Although in the opening credits, they do present the idea that Godzilla could physically exist - but let’s not open this subject.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays the explosive bomb disposal technician, Lieutenant Ford Brody, who turns out not be that good a technician actually. In order to save the planet, he will have to remember what his father, Joe Brody, portrayed by Bryan Cranston, has been studying for the last six years. Also he will have to team up with Dr. Ichiro Serizawa, played by Ken Watanabe, who is a scientist who has been hoping for a date with Godzilla for years and does not intend on missing his chance. Taylor-Johnson will also need to do a bit of babysitting, on his way to save his wife Elle Brody, who is portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen.
Romantic moments and losses are spread throughout the entire movie, including the "love" ingredient in the plot. As the jokes go, you will not be laughing every second, yet some serious/meaningful/stony-faced moments will force you to burst out in laughter.
To sum up, the new Godzilla will make you wonder whether all the chemical disasters in human history were cover ups for something bigger and much more dangerous and, of course, make you feel more insecure the next time you go for a swim. The film will also make you realise why the old generations loved Godzilla and the film studios have spent so much money on shooting and rebooting the movies over and over again.
P.S.: Let’s hope that Gareth Edwards will either bring Godzilla to guest star in his sequel of the "Monster", currently titled "Monsters: Dark Continent", or starts working immediately on the next Godzilla movie, because you will miss the roaring of the magnificent creature the moment you step outside the cinema. And also, I hope I didn’t destroy Santa Claus for anyone.
