Angelina Jolie grows wings and horns and tries to convince us that Maleficent, the main villain of the sleeping beauty fairytale, is not the evil fairy we all thought and that there’s more to the classic story we have known for years. And convince us she does. “Disney’s Maleficent” will take you on a time journey and fill you in with all the details about how she came to be the heartless fairy who terrorised her own and irrevocably cursed the beautiful princess of the human kingdom.
The storyline, written by Linda Woolverton, differs heavily from the original story introduced in the Walt Disney's 1959 animated film “Sleeping Beauty”. For example, you will not see Angelina Jolie turn into a dragon or losing sight of princess Aurora for sixteen years, as the predecessor story tells. Although, you will get your dose of Maleficent as the evil antagonist who curses a little baby girl to take revenge.
Angelina Jolie delivers on her role and brings that dark sexy side of the character to the big screen in a live-action movie, which talks about true love, belief, trust, friendship, hopes, dreams and of course revenge. Prepare to laugh hard, while watching Angelina Jolie trying to scare a baby, enjoy the special effects of multiple transformations of a crow, and the inability of Angelina Jolie to scream when someone steals the most precious thing to her in the world and and her belief in the mankind is betrayed.
Elle Fanning, plays Aurora, the princess blessed with the gifts of beauty, love and happiness, who is the object of revenge of Maleficent. The storyline of the film, explores a completely different option at that point. Maleficent knows where the princess is all the time, but just watches her over until the curse is released upon her. Elle Fanning brings the appropriate innocence and beauty to her character and balances the dynamics of acting in the same film with a Hollywood legend.
Sharlto Copley portrays King Stefan, who turns out to be more than just an unlucky king and father who tried to protect his daughter from a terrible curse in the Walt Disney's 1959 animated film. Sam Riley plays the part of the right hand of Maleficent as her shapeshifter toy / confidant Diaval, who becomes a human/dragon/wolf/baby-sitter and does whatever the evil fairy needs him to do.
As most of the movies do these days, Maleficent tries to include smart jokes, epic battles, romantic moments, friends in need, hopes for the existence of true love, dark magic, good magic and heart troubles.
To sum up, after the huge success of “Frozen” last year, Walt Disney continues to twist their own stories and turn them into financial triumphs. If you’re a fan of Disney stories, or Angelina Jolie, or tales involving magic, you will enjoy watching the evil fairy teaming up with the world of shadows in a movie that will change your mindset towards one of the most famous villains of all time. If not, you will still enjoy everything the movie has to offer, except that dreadful scream of Angelina Jolie.
P.S. Any fans of the ABC TV series “Once Upon A Time” will be left wondering if Maleficent will be the next villain of the series, as last year with the success of “Frozen”, the Snow Queen of Arendelle arrived to Storybrook in the final episode of the last season.
