Thomas Morgenstern to go to Winter Games

Morgenstern goes to Sochi but Reichelt stays home

An Austrian ski jumper who was hospitalised after a serious crash a few weeks ago will take part in the upcoming Sochi Winter Games in Russia.

The Austrian Olympic Committee announced on Monday that Thomas Morgenstern will be included as one of the 130 winter athletes and trainers on their way to the games in early February.

Twenty-seven year-old Morgenstern, who has won three Olympic medals, was injured after he lost his balance during a training jump and landed on his back and neck. He has now left hospital and is beginning to train again.

However, fellow Austrian winter games competitor Hannes Reichelt will not be joining Morgenstern at Sochi after having an emergency operation when he was diagnosed with a spinal disc injury.

Reichelt, 33, was on top form, winning the prestigious downhill ski World Cup race, before the injury was discovered during an MRI exam. Following the announcement, he said that "the dream of Olympic Games" is now over for him, although he is relieved that the back problem was discovered.

"Thank goodness I decided to do this test today, or it could have had serious consequences," said Reichelt.

"Health comes first and I still want to do sports once my career is over."
